Goshawk Productivity Study
Project #2
Started: March 1, 2005

Last Updated: Mar. 1, 2006 (Project Canceled)

Three separate requests to members, individually mailed information packets and phone calls to nearly 60% of the CHC members with a one year long campaign to collect nesting locations resulted in only 4 nesting locations being turned in to the study. Since this would not provide any significant data and since the membership by lack of response does not appear to support the basis of the project.  After one last plea in the Jan-06 newsletter, no location additonal progress had been made so the decision to cancel the project was made.

Project Leader:

Project Synopsis:
Productivity studies will be conducted by the membership starting with preliminary data collection and site identification in the 2005 season.  The identified locations will be consolidated and scheduled for monitoring in 2006 to collect complete productivity information on those locations as well as to attempt to consolidate data from other sources.  At the completion of the 2006 survey, and assessment will be made to determine the feasibility of make this a 3 year study to collect data depending on the success of the first year, cooperation of the membership and related organizations, and the results of the study.

Project Status:
Surveys from the membership to establish a preliminary count on the number of known locations as well as determine the membership support were conducted in April.  The results were tabulated and discussed at the membership meeting prior to the Spring Banquet.  The results were very encouraging with over 83% of the membership in support of the project, and with a significantly greater than expected number of potential territories to survey.  The board voted to proceed with he study and work has begun on the logistics for the study.
The database has been created with the the requirements of the DOW and the membership restrictions put in place.  It has been tested with location data to date, but not yet with productivity data.
A outline for the study report has been created which included the collection guidelines and survey forms.  The data collection forms and instruction sheet have been edited and approved and are due for sending out to a subset of the membership by the end of May.  A couple weeks later than expected, but since the process has taken a lot longer than expected, we have already conceded that a complete data-set will not be feasible this year, so data collection this year will consist of primarily location and logistic information.
We hope to complete contacting the remainder of the membership by the end of May.  This should be relatively painless, and the only reason for the remaining phone calls are to determine is data collection packets will need to be sent out (if a member has potential territories that they are willing to release information on).
June will see the assignment of various agencies to volunteers to query about results of possible studies that might be combined.  We will also ask that they share that data with the DOW and potentially consolidate data if available.  If specifics are not available, then we will use the results to compare ours with as a control group.

Proposed Schedule:
Data Collection Packets Mailed - May 22
Independent data collection for June through July with final data collection being assembled in August.
Results from year one of the study we hope will available to the board by the beginning of Sept for final review and to the general membership by the end of Sept. (with a little luck in time for the Sept. newsletter)
