Take a look at some of the completed projects and results. They
are listed in order of completion, the most recently completed projects at the
top.
Comanche
National Grasslands Raptor Surveys (May 2006)
Back for another year to locate and document raptor nesting
locations within the grasslands to help the forest service manage and track
raptor activities. Last year turned up a number of locations and this year
will focus on new areas in the grasslands.
Ferruginous Hawk Nesting Platform Project
(July, 2006)
In conjunction with the Pawnee National
Grasslands. Caretakers has set a goal to build and erect 10 Ferruginous nesting
platforms on the grasslands. The timing was fortuitous, the grasslands
were looking at putting up platforms to replace lost trees in the area, and
Caretakers was looking to expand the FNP program, and put up a few more
platforms. This is a pretty ambitious number for the area, so quite a few
volunteers will be needed.
Ferruginous Hawk Nesting Platform Project Comanche National Grasslands (June 2006)
The
success of the 2005 project lead to an invitation from the Grasslands for the
CHC to return again this year. The project is being done in
conjunction with the Comanche National Grasslands and the Colorado Division of
Wildlife. The goal of which is to build and erect two or three additional Ferruginous nesting
platforms on the Comanche grasslands. Last years goal to extend this
project another year has been realized!
Comanche
Grasslands Survey
A small wildlife, bird count and raptor nesting survey in
cooperation with the Comanche National Grasslands. This projects is a two
day hike, count and document project in a beautiful and remote part of the
state. Maybe do a little camping and hiking with a club member. Find
a partner and plan to spend a weekend in Comanche. Details are just coming
together on this project, so stay tuned. The survey is expected to take
place in early June.
Comanche
Grasslands Survey (Cancelled)
With feedback from the members of the club and discussion with
the DOW, the Northern Goshawk studies appear to be feasible in a modified
version of the original ideas. One study may be conducted by the club to
help augment data available on the Northern Goshawk. A productivity study which
will determine the production of active nest sites currently know by both
members as well as the DOW and forest service. We will also be talking to
the various Forest service agencies to see if we might be able to collect and
consolidate information from those and other state and federal agencies.
Since the data involved in this project is of a controversial
nature, only preliminary inquiries have been done at this point. This is
currently being discussed by the CHC board to determine if the project should
move forward.
Ferruginous Hawk Nesting Platform Project
(2005)
This is the inaugural project for the Caretakers program! The project is being done in
conjunction with the Comanche National Grasslands and the Colorado Division of
Wildlife. The goal of which is to build and erect two Ferruginous nesting
platforms on the Comanche grasslands. There has been some discussion of
extending the project into a second year once a platform design has been
perfected, contacts are established and the success of the original platforms
has been determined.
